With the launch of Elastic fleet type for AppStream 2.0, we’re able to help our customers start streaming their applications faster with less technical setup. The pricing model of per second billing makes this service even more attractive to use. It allows scaling down the fleet to $0 when no usage is active.
For one of our customers with thousands of end users in a call center supporting their retail business, we analyzed a 21% cost saving by migrating over to Elastic fleets. This takes advantage of the new per second billing, especially when users would disconnect from their session right after another hour is billed.
The new Elastic Fleet type has a few key benefits over the existing Always-On and On-Demand fleet types.
- Experience – the end user feels always-on, and will scale automatically.
- Per second Billing – Elastic fleet streaming instances are charged on one second increments, with a minimum of 15 minutes, for the duration of the streaming session. The pricing is per instance-hour. The instance charge includes compute, storage, and any network traffic used by the streaming protocol. For example, if a user streams for 30 minutes using a Windows-based standard.medium in N. Virginia, the customer will be metered .5 hours at $0.15 per hour, for a bill of $0.075.
- Scale to zero – Elastic fleets offer true “scale to zero” – meaning, the customer is not billed when there are no users streaming.
- RDS license – still applies per user
